Jannett Evans
Artist of the Month for May & June 2011

Lovington artist Jannett Evans painted her very first oil painting when she was 12 years old. Her sister Marian shared her paints and guided her through the process. It was a dozen more years before she had her own paints and took it up again. Not long after that, she started taking classes at NMJC with Professor Larry Wilcox. She is a member and past president of LEAA. She says she is blessed with lifelong friends from her LEAA membership. Jannett is married to Walton Evans and has three daughters, and seven grandchildren.

She enjoys working in many mediums and most subject matter excites her. She has never felt the need to lock herself into one genre. Being a very visual person, Jannett says it came natural for her to love art, and artistic images are food for her soul.

Artist statement by: Jannett Evans

My artistic purpose is to entertain the eye. My desire is to touch the viewer in a primal way and get him involved in the artwork. I would like to think the viewer might ask: What was the artist thinking when he or she painted this? An Artist speaks in a language of her own, using color, light, form and contrast to form a visual dialogue. A painter is not unlike a poet taking thought and struggling to give it shape and form. A poet's thought and a painter's vision both come to life within their medium, whether it be through words or paint.
No matter the subject, representational or abstract, I embrace energy as a vital part of each painting. Something real yet unseen, Energy is the power that moves through the universe changing the face of our world both positively and negatively. I am speaking of a spiritual energy, the power in our thoughts, words and visions. I have had visceral experiences where painting came with ease and there are times when I struggle to find my way. Painting can be a spiritual experience in both instances. I love to work abstractly, encouraging the viewer to ask themselves: What do I see? Do I like this? What does this remind me of? I would like them to explore their own thoughts and feelings when it comes to art. There are no right or wrong answers it comes down to learning what you love. When I say I want to entertain the eye, I would like the viewer to enjoy the visual concert. Take the time to see and to become aware of how the artwork makes them feel. Abstract Art might be viewed as: Thought revealed through images once unseen.
