Nancy Powell
Artist of the Month for October and November

Nancy Powell was born in southeastern Colorado, but grew up in the panhandle of Oklahoma. A rural upbringing did not offer many extracurricular activities, yet the exposure to an art teacher in elementary school and a grandmother that engaged her in art related activities inspired a lifelong desire to pursue artistic possibilities.

Taking classes in art, whenever the opportunity arises, creates an interest in many mediums: drawing (pencil, pen and ink), painting (oil, pastels, acrylics, and watercolors) sculpting (cement, foam, casting, clay, and found articles), photography, and recently experimentation in clay. Each of these has been a catalyst for teaching. At the present, she is employed by the Stone Elementary P.I.E. to teach K-6 art classes. Once a week, Nancy along with her art carts stop in each classroom for experiments in the elements and design of art for their projects. Periodically she is sharing art techniques with teachers during in-service for the Hobbs Municipal Schools.

Being a member of Llano Estacado Art Association and Lea County Commission for the Arts has been an awesome connection for Nancy to the local art community. Through these organizations, she has had the opportunity to learn as well as show her work and sell a few pieces. However, the greatest reward has been in learning from the wonderful artists that are sprinkled through our communities to talk shop and learn from each other.
